National Pie Day is Celebrated in Rockland Maine

Rockland Maine celebrates pies in a big way. For two Sundays in January, the 14 & 21st, the Historic Inns of Rockland will host the 3rd annual Pies on Parade.

The Pies on Parade event marks National Pie Day on January 23rd. The Historic Inns of Rockland; the Berry Manor Inn, Captain Lindsey House and Limerock Inn will have demonstrations of pie baking techniques, decorating and, of course, lots of pies to sample.

Weekend guests of the inns will be treated to an assortment of breakfast pies, ranging from sun-dried tomato, goat cheese, or lobster pie topped off by pie al la mode for dessert. Each guest gets their own pie to take home.

Be prepared to eat pies all weekend, not only will they be delicious, proceeds from ticket sales go to a good cause; the Area Interfaith Outreach Food Pantry of Rockland. In the three years the event has been held, Pies on Parade has donated more than $5,000 to the pantry, providing food for 200 families for a year.

The demonstrations by Berry Manor Inn’s “dueling innkeepers’ Moms”, mother and mother-in-law of the innkeeper, are not to be missed. They carry on a friendly feud throughout the year about who makes the best pie crust and will be sharing their recipes.

The Captain Lindsey House chef will show how to decorate pies with marzipans and meringues. You can watch as the Limerock Inn innkeepers prepare and serve their homemade cherry, apple and berry pies with their own blend of Limerock coffee.

Two additional inns to this year’s event are the Lakeshore Inn and the Waterman House & Gardens. The Lakeshore is famous for their sweet potato pie, the innkeepers will show how to make it as a chiffon pie and a dense custard. Waterman House’s rich seafood pie is sure to give you a genuine taste of mid-coast Maine.
