The Newbury Street galleries are a mirror into the works of contemporary and classic artists.
Whether you love, hate or just barely understand contemporary art, the Judie Rotenberg and Barbara Krakow galleries will pique your interest. The Vose Gallery is the oldest family owned gallery in the United States. It was started in 1841 as an artists’ supply store in Providence Rhode Island. Robert Vose opened the Boston gallery in 1897.
Housed in an elegant late nineteenth century townhouse are five floors of art – more than 1000 works – by deceased and living American artists. On display are paintings by the Hudson River School artists, as well as the works of Ernest Albert, Frank W. Benson, William Louis Sonntag and Bostonian Polly Thayer Starr.
After you’ve fueled your artistic senses, tempt your palate with the street’s plethora of restaurants; savor the flavors of Algeria and Morocco at the Jewel of Newbury or go Italian at Ciao Bella, famous for itsswordfish chop with sautéed tomatoes, fresh basil, black olives and extra virgin olive oil. If its beef you’re craving try the steak tartar at the Capital Grille, hand chopped filet mignon with layers of sweet onions andcapers.
