I love the names! Jack Frost Mountain is great, and Camelback. There's a Camelback in Phoenix - bit less snow there, though.

I have always snickered at the names of ski areas, too. At Okemo, a wonderful ski resort in Vermont, there's a whole new section called Jackson's Gore. In New England, the word "gore" in a town name means that it was a little section of land that didn't get included in the original land surveys in colonial times, so was not included in the land grants --hence nobody owned it. That's the location of the new section of Okemo, but somehow gore is not the image I want when I'm flying down a mountain on slippery sticks!

I forgot to mention that I hope you'll be covering some New England ski resorts, too -- although with the warm autumn we've had, it's hard to think of deep snowcover.

Oh ... you're really giving me a desire for snow! Now that I'm down in Australia for the summer (winter up where you all are) the thought of curling up in a warm cabin with a good hot chocolate watching the snow fall ... ahhh, not something I'm likely to see here. Will have to experience it just by reading about it - thanks Fran!
cheers

Yes, the thought of skiing down a camel's back is quite funny. I've hiked Camelback in Phoenix, it was tough going.

I don't know who made up the names of the ski mountains in the Poconos, but they are a hoot. My favorite is Jack Frost!

I will be covering ski areas in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts in the next few weeks. Many of them have installed new snow making equipment. They can't count on Mother Nature anymore.

Don't forget the hot mulled wine Amanda. That's one of the joys of living in a northern hemisphere, snow. Although some people think of it as a "four-letter word"!

Look for more articles about cold New England in a few weeks.

Several of these ski areas are very close to metropolitan cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC and Wilmington Delaware.
