» Amanda Kendle - Fall colors

Fran, how reliable is the timing for the "crimson and gold"? I know, seasons change - but where I come from (Western Australia) we barely have any seasons at all, so I'm a bit naive when it comes to leaf-change timing! I'd love to get to that part of the world one fall (autumn, in my language!). Friends are heading over there next week: will they be too early or is their timing good this year?

Hi Amanda:
Next week might be a bit early for full fall colors. More than likely just the tips of the trees will be turning. We've had a lot of rain this spring, so colour should be peak at end of Sept/early Oct.

Color or not, Vermont is beautiful this time of year. I've been all over Vermont, what part are your friends going to? They should plan to dress in layers as it could be warm in morning, get cooler as the sun goes down, which is about 6:30pm nowadays.

Fran

Thanks for the weather tips, I'll pass them on. They'll be there for 3 weeks in total, so hopefully long enough to see plenty of good color.
cheers

Chiming in from Southern New Hampshire, where I'll be staying until the last leaf has fallen. The trees are just beginning to turn here and it promises to be a glorious year for colors. Just now turning are the "swamp maples" -- the small maples that grow in low wet areas, and they are brilliant reds this year. I actually like this early color stage because it is so beautiful to see the bright patches against the predominant greens. It's a tantalizing promise of beauty to come -- and it can only get better.

Oh Barbara, I'm so jealous! Those swamp maples really sound special. Over here in southern Germany we do end up with brilliantly colored vineyards, but somehow it's just not the same ... and back home in Western Australia you wouldn't even know that such a season as fall exists!
cheers
