» Amanda Kendle - What to see in Delaware

Fran,
I've just come back from my first trip to your part of the world (I'm Australian and live in Europe) - visiting Connecticut, NY, Washington DC, Maryland and Delaware. In fact, by chance, we spent a night in Newark,Delaware - we came off the highway just to sleep somewhere, and realised later exactly where we were! The motel brochure managed to tell us it's the 2nd smallest state, and historically the "First State", but gave no hints on what we could have done there, had we decided to stick around. What did we miss???

I look forward to reading more of your articles, now that I know a little about this part of the world!
cheers,
Amanda

You missed some of the most glorious beaches in the USA, and, lots of historic Federal style architecture. Hope you get to visit it again the next time you are in this part of the world.

The other things I'd suggest seeing if you get back to Delaware are Longwood Gardens and Winterthur Museum & Country Estate. The gardens are glorious, and Winterthur is one of the nation's top museums of American antique furniture, desoration, crafts and art, all in room settings. It's so big that only parts are open at any time. Fran's right about the beaches, too -- long, fine sand, and good for swimming.

Oh no, I can't believe I missed what sound like perfect beaches. I admit, I was ill-prepared here: but my goal was actually to get down to relatives in Maryland, and the Delaware stop was because my husband was ill! Hmm, and the weather would've been perfect for an afternoon at the beach ...
