Visiting family over the Thanksgiving holiday? Turn your family visit into a wonderful vacation with these simple tips.
Thanksgiving is said to be one of the most traveled holidays of the year. Although some may take a leisure vacation, most will travel to spend their Thanksgiving holiday with close friends and relatives.
Visiting relatives can definitely be an enjoyable experience. Nonetheless, it is not the same as taking the family on a planned trip. With a few simple changes to one's itinerary, a visit with family can easily become a memorable vacation.
- Stay in a hotel a couple of nights. No matter where the destination, there is bound to be a hotel somewhere nearby. Pick a couple of nights to stay in a hotel and enjoy all of its amenities. Go for a swim in the pool, enjoy the hot tub and workout in the fitness center. On the last night at the hotel, consider treating the family to a movie in the room. To top off the trip, order banana splits or other desserts from room service.
- Go sight seeing. Most relatives will be more then happy to take you on a tour of their town. Enjoy the architecture, visit museums, art galleries, zoos and aquariums. Take lots of photos and purchase souvenirs to commemorate your trip.
- Attend a special event. Are there any sporting events, plays or concerts taking place in or around the town you plan to visit? If so, attending a special event is another way to turn your holiday into a great vacation.
- Try a new activity. What activity do the locals in the area enjoy doing? Trying a new activity can make for a very memorable Thanksgiving vacation. Some ideas might include hunting, hay rides, skiing (if weather permits), fishing, horse back riding or hiking.
- Get a taste of local cuisine. Most families will host a traditional feast on Thanksgiving Day. The following day, however, you and the family can go and sample some of the local cuisine. Visit local wineries for wine tasting, coffee shops to try specialty drinks and search for local goodies like candies, salsas, jams and jellies.
- Shop on Black Friday. Another big Thanksgiving tradition is shopping on what is known as "Black Friday" (the day after Thanksgiving). This is a great opportunity to visit the local malls or shop at stores you are not familiar with.
Other ideas include renting a cabin, or spending a day at the spa or an indoor waterpark. Make arrangements in advance and be sure to inform relatives of your plans. Following these simple tips will ensure an enjoyable, relaxing and restful Thanksgiving vacation.
