Communities in the midwest are planning several big events to ring in the New Year. Like New York City, many will host firework displays and ball drops.

Cities in the heartland are looking forward to grand outdoor New Year's Eve celebrations. These events will feature musical performances, special activities for children, fireworks and/or a ball drop at midnight.

New Year's Eve Outdoor Celebrations in Ohio and Wisconsin

  • The city of Port Clinton, Ohio and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin hosts very unique New Year's Eve celebrations. Being the "walleye capital of the world", Port Clinton drops a humungous walleye from the sky, while Prairie du Chien hosts the "Droppin of the Carp" in which a carp is dropped to commemorate the New Year. In addition to fish drops, guests can enjoy refreshments, entertainment and various other activities.
  • A family oriented New Year's Eve celebration will take place at RiverScape MetroPark in Dayton, Ohio. There will be musical entertainment, face painting, ice skating and fireworks over Great Miami River at midnight. The event will begin at 8 p.m. Admission is free.

New Year's Eve Outdoor Celebrations in Kansas

  • Manhattan, Kansas (a.k.a Little Apple) is home to Kansas State University. Each year the Little Apple hosts a big New Year's Eve Celebration and Ball Drop similar to that of the Big Apple (Manhattan, New York). Festivities begin at 10 p.m. and will continue well into the New Year. Activities include musical guests Platinum recording artists Eve 6, fireworks, a laser light show and of course a ball drop at midnight.

New Year's Eve Outdoor Celebrations in Illinois and Michigan

  • The city of Chicago will host two outdoor events on New Year's Eve. A combination of music and fireworks can be enjoyed at Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park. These festivities will begin at around 10 p.m. Chicagoans and guests to the area can also enjoy events at the Navy Pier. A special event for children featuring Ronald McDonald will begin at 6 p.m. and fireworks will begin some time before midnight.
  • Grand Rapids, Michigan will hold its first outdoor New Year's Eve celebration at Rosa Parks Circle. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. commencing with a performance by country singer Daryl Worley and later performances by the Plain White T's Band and Just Jake. The ball will drop at midnight and the celebration will continue into the New Year. Admission to the event is free.

If attending an outdoor event on New Year's Eve, be sure to dress warm as it will be quite cold outside. Consider staying overnight at a local hotel, or having a late dinner at a restaurant near the event site for better parking or a good place to watch the show.
