Whether visiting one of the islands, fishing for walleye or relaxing on one of its many beaches, Lake Erie offers an array of activities for vacationers.

On the northeast coast, Lake Erie is a popular spot for a weekend getaway or family vacation. One of five Great Lakes, Lake Erie is best known for great fishing, boating, various water sports and its many resort islands.

Visiting Lake Erie Beaches and Parks

Lake Erie beaches span several hundreds of miles through many states in the northeast. Some of the most popular beaches include Edgewater Park (Cleveland, Ohio), Lake Erie State Park (Brockton, New York) and Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio). Lake Erie beach and park activities include swimming, canoeing, hiking, biking, beach volleyball and picnicking. Some Lake Erie parks also offer overnight accommodations on their campgrounds or in one of their cabins or lodges.

Fishing on Lake Erie

One of the most popular ways for visitors to enjoy fishing on Lake Erie is through one of its fishing charters. Typically offered between late April and early October, these fishing excursions can be a fishermen's dream. Charters include a fully equipped boat, supplies (including rods, reels, tackle, ice for fish, etc.), and an experienced Captain (fishing guide).

Although Lake Erie is most known for its abundance of walleye, depending upon the season, one might also catch bass, yellow perch, steelhead, trout or salmon.

Vacationing on the Lake Erie Shores/Islands

Looking for a little peace and tranquility? An ideal vacation might be on one of Lake Erie's public islands. These islands offer a wide variety of activities including golfing, lighthouse tours, wine tasting, water sports, historical museums and much more. For lodging one can opt to stay in a motel or at a beach/themed island resort (available on many of the islands). Some popular islands to visit include Presque Isle (Pennsylvania), Put-in-Bay (Ohio), Middle Bass Island (Ohio) and Kelleys Island (Ohio).

Hotels/Lodging with Views of Lake Erie

Lake Erie offers a wonderful ambience for a romantic vacation or get away. Various hotels and resorts throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York offer romantic lodging packages along with rooms with views of Lake Erie. These hotels include Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel (Erie, Pennsylvania), Clarion Inn and Conference Center (in Dunkirk, New York about 40 minutes from Buffalo), South Beach Resort (Marblehead, Ohio) and Lake Breeze Inn (Sheffield, Ohio).

Other ways to enjoy Lake Erie include boat tours, scuba diving, snorkeling, or visiting Cedar Point (an amusement park along Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio). While on vacation one might also opt to dine in one of the many restaurants on Lake Erie, a great way to take in and appreciate its beauty.
