Over the years many NCAA teams have developed passionate rivalries. This competitiveness makes for exciting football and great mini-vacations or getaways.
Some of the best football games involve rivalries that have festered over decades. For most players these teams became arch enemies before they were even conceived. Nonetheless, the passion continues resulting in great football. This season many rivals will face off in the Northeast. Use one of these games to build an exciting men's getaway weekend or a short family vacation. Michigan vs. Ohio StateBoth of these teams have long been a part of the Big Ten Conference. Perhaps this is part of the motivation for this strong rivalry. No matter the reason, the battle goes on. This year these two teams will face-off in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 21. While in the Ann Arbor area consider a visit to the university's botanical gardens or a trip to the Detroit Zoo (less than an hours drive away). There are numerous hotels within just a few miles of the stadium including a Holiday Inn, Residence Inn and a Comfort Inn. Kansas vs. MissouriPerhaps best described as a turf war, these two schools compete each year in what is known as the Border Showdown. The teams will meet this year at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Saturday, November 28. While in town be sure to pay a visit to the new interactive basketball center known as the College Basketball Experience. Hotels near the stadium include a Holiday Inn, Sheraton and Drury Inn. Michigan State vs. MichiganBecause these two schools are recognized as the top universities in the state of Michigan, their competitiveness can perhaps be equated to that of a sibling rivalry. The fact that they are less than two hours apart simply adds fuel to the fire. Over the years these teams have competed at almost every level, but none has been more dramatic than the battle on the football field. On Saturday, October 3 these teams will compete once again at Spartan Stadium. The Michigan State campus is located in East Lansing just outside of the state's capitol of Lansing. While in the area consider touring the state capitol, visiting the Potter Park Zoo or playing a round of golf at the Forest Akers Golf Course (managed by the university). Hotels near the campus include the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center (on the campus), Courtyard by Marriott (about four minutes from campus) and Candlewood Suites East Lansing. Minnesota vs. WisconsinThis rivalry is also one based upon a competition of state borders. These two teams from the Big Ten conference will compete for bragging rights on Saturday, October 3 in Minneapolis. Other things to do while in the Twin Cities include visiting the Mall of America, Walker Art Center and the Science Museum of Minnesota. Lodging options around the stadium include the Radisson University Hotel, the Holiday Inn, Residence Inn and Aloft Minneapolis. Notre Dame vs. USCThis non-traditional rivalry began many, many decades ago. Over the years it has been encouraged by both schools and their alumni. The motivation behind it seems to be the historical success of each team and their players. On October 17 the battle continues when Notre Dame meets USC in South Bend. This would be a great game for a men's weekend as there are many others sports related activities to do in the area. Some suggestions include golfing at Warren Golf Course (on the campus of Notre Dame) and visiting the College Football Hall of Fame. Hotels near the campus include the Hilton Garden Inn, Residence Inn, Marriott and Holiday Inn Express. Because of the popularity of these games, it can be difficult to secure tickets. Consequently, it is important to move quickly on plans for this season.
