While there are many options for travel between Boston and New York, there are more options than ever for getting to these cities by bus.

Regardless if the starting point is New York or Boston, getting to the destination can seem so close but yet so far away. On the map it looks like a stone’s throw, but the prospect of driving between the two cities and fighting the traffic can be daunting. Here are some options that can make the trip less painful, and maybe even productive or enjoyable.

Greyhound - Inexpensive and Recently Upgraded

This tried and true option is the most well known and also inexpensive for about $21 each way. It picks up at Boston’s South Station Bus Terminal and drops off at Penn Station in New York. Historically not known for being a comfortable or luxury option, Greyhound has recently redone most of the fleet for their east cost routes. The new perks consist of wireless internet, electrical outlets for laptops and cell phones and more legroom.

Fung Wah "The Chinatown Bus"

Commonly known as the “Chinatown Bus,” this option picks up at the South Station Bus Terminal (near Chinatown) in Boston and drops off in Chinatown in New York. At $15 each way, this is the most inexpensive way to get between the two cities. The Fung Wah, however, does not have amenities like wireless internet.

Bolt Bus

This relatively new bus company made news for its $1 each way fares. It also has free wireless internet, electronic outlets and reserved seating. However, there are only a couple of the $1 fares available for each trip. Once those are purchased, the fares go up from there, usually resulting in $18 each way. This bus also picks up from the South Station Bus Terminal in Boston and drops off in New York at 34th and 8th.

Mega Bus

Similar to Bolt Bus, this company also markets their $1 each way fares, but once they are gone, the prices go up to $19 or so each way. Depending on where in each city is convenient, Mega Bus may be the way to go. It picks up in Boston at the Back Bay MBTA station (across town from South Station) and drops off at 28th and 7th in New York. One interesting differentiator about Mega Bus is that, in addition to the east coast, service is offered between some cities in the Midwest and other parts of the country. Mega Bus also has free wireless internet.

LimoLiner - Comfort and Luxury Between Boston and New York

If comfort, productivity and a company expense account are available, LimoLiner presents an option that is tough to pass up. At $86 each way, LimoLiner is not for those on a budget. However, LimoLiner offers an attendant that will provide food and drinks, comfortable seats, clear cell phone reception and televisions with Direct TV broadcasting business and news channels. LimoLiner picks up at the Hilton in Boston’s Back Bay and drops off at the Hilton in New York at 53rd Street in Midtown.

There are many options for getting to and from New York and Boston. Depending on budget and location, there is a bus option that will suit everyone from college students to business executives.
