2009 Fall County Fairs in the MidwestAgricultural Events Held in September and October
Today's agricultural fairs offer great opportunities for a fun weekend. Although many of these fairs take place in the summer, a few are held in the early fall.
The fall season is a wonderful time to attend a county fair in the Midwest. Typically the weather is perfect (not too hot, but not too cold), and it makes for a great getaway or break from school and work. Although most fairs take place in the warmer months of July and August, there are a few that are held in the early fall. Several of these fairs have been taking place for many decades. Some of the entertainment at these fairs include agricultural exhibits, various competitions, vendors, fun food and carnival rides. Over the last several years many well known artists have also frequented both county and state fairs. The Fairfield County Fair in Lancaster, OhioThis event will be held from Sunday, October 11 through Saturday, October 17. Located in the city of Lancaster near Ohio's capitol of Columbus, this year's fair will feature agricultural classes and shows, various races, derbies and competitions, local/regional bands and singing groups. Hotels near the event include a Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn and Suites. If looking to attend a fair in the Midwest, this might likely be the last fair of the year. Fall Fair in Dekalb County, IndianaThe city of Auburn (about twenty miles from Fort Wayne) will celebrate their fall fair from Monday, September 28 through Saturday, October 3. During the week various activities will take place. There will be a little something for everyone. Just a few events include a carnival with rides and tasty treats, several free concerts with both Gospel and rock groups, cooking, baking and agricultural competitions and exhibits, a pageant, auction and parade. Hotels near the fairgrounds include a Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Suites and Days Inn. Brown County Fair in Georgetown, OhioKnown as the little state fair, the Brown County Fair will begin on Monday, September 28 and continue through Saturday, October 3. The event will offer an array of activities for the entire family. Some scheduled activities include a parade, carnival (with rides and other attractions), various exhibits, shows and competitions. Each day there will also be a variety of scheduled performances including bands, singers, choirs and cloggers. Lodging options are very limited around the Georgetown area, consequently, guests to the area should consider staying in the Cincinnati area (about 50 minutes from the fairgrounds). St. Joseph County Grange Fair (a.k.a. the Centreville Fair) in Centreville, MichiganA performance by country singer Darius Rucker will be the main act at this year's Centreville Fair. Beginning on Saturday, September 20 and continuing through Saturday, September 26, the fair is a favorite in both southwestern Michigan and northwest Indiana. In addition to great entertainment, this year's event will feature carnival rides, auctions, animal shows, farming exhibits and harness racing. Hotels near the Centreville community include the Best Western in Three Rivers, and the Holiday Inn Express and Suites (also in Three Rivers). Admission for most of these fairs is free, however, there is a charge for many of the activities. Although prices vary, most charge about $1 per carnival ride, or one can purchase a wristband for the option of riding all day.
