College basketball fans can enjoy several tournaments and sporting events taking place in the northeast over the holidays.
College basketball fans don't have to wait until March for basketball madness. During the holidays, there are several basketball tournaments and games taking place throughout the northeast.
College Basketball Tournaments On The East Coast
- Jimmy V Classic - The annual Jimmy V’s Men’s Basketball Classic will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York. This year's competitors are West Virginia vs. Davidson, and Villanova vs. West Virginia. The event is a fundraiser to support the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Hotels in close proximity to the arena include the Wingate Manhattan Midtown, Doubletree Hotel 29th street and the Radisson on Broadway.
- BB& T Classic - Held annually, the BB & T Classic benefiting the Children's Charities Foundation, will take place on Sunday, December 7th, 2008 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Four teams will face off during this competition. Virginia Tech will take on Navy, and Maryland will play Washington. If staying overnight, there are several lodging options close to the arena including Melrose Place, One Washington Circle Hotel, Embassy Suites Washington and George Washington Inn.
College Basketball Tournaments In The Midwest
- The Hartford Hall of Fame Classic - This year’s event will feature Indiana University vs. Gonzaga, and Notre Dame vs. Ohio State. Held on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the event is a fundraiser for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts. Lodging is available nearby at the Crowne Plaza downtown, Omni Severin Hotel or the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown.
- SEC Big East Invitational - The U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati is one of the hosts for the SEC Big East Invitational. Teams competing in Cincinnati are the University of Louisville against Ole Miss and Cincinnati versus Mississippi State. There are several hotels less then a mile from the arena; the Westin Cincinnati, Hilton Cincinnati and the Cincinnatian. The event will take place on Thursday, December 18, 2008.
Other College Basketball Events In The Northeast
In addition to tournaments, some of the top teams in college basketball will meet in the northeast over the holidays.
- Saturday, December 6, 2008 - Illinois vs. Georgia at the United Center in Chicago.
- Saturday, December 6, 2008 - Wisconsin vs. Marquette at Marquette.
- Saturday, December 13, 2008 - Georgetown vs. Memphis at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.
- Saturday, December 20, 2008 - Purdue Boilermakers vs. Davidson at Purdue.
- Monday, December 29, 2008 - University of Connecticut Huskies vs. the Georgetown Hoyas at Connecticut.
Combined with an overnight stay, all of these games and events will make for a great holiday vacation.
